SHORELINE STABILIZATION & PROTECTION SERVICES

In our region, the typical approach to stabilizing a shoreline is to line the shoreline with Rip Rap rock to slow or impede the wave and wind erosion. This method is known as Hard Armoring the shoreline. This method will have to be redone every 5-10 years depending upon which type of rock is used based on the density and type of rock. Rip Rap is susceptible to a freeze-thaw cycle that causes the rock to break down over time.

The other option is through the use of planting native grasses that can handle the rise and fall of a body of water. Coir wattles are typically used with this method and installed into the natural cut-out between water and shoreline. Once installed native plants, either plugged or seeded into the surrounding soil become integrated with the wattle itself, and in turn, the Coir wattle acts as a growing medium. There are three types of plants that should be planted on a shoreline, In water, Edge water, and Out water. With the introduction of the correct varieties of these deep-rooted plants, shoreline erosion will become extinct and the plants with proper maintenance will become a truly sustainable option.
